Jake Haulot edges Andreotti & Barnes for Watsonville win
Haulot, King, Villanueva, Keldsen and Welborn score Friday wins at Watsonville Speedway
Watsonville, CA…Cotati’s Jake Haulot is routinely one of the fast cars when he makes the trip down to Watsonville Speedway. On Friday night he was able to fend off a late challenge from Jake Andreotti and Jett Barnes to claim an entertaining victory with the Gold Star GMC Sprint Cars.
A total of 80 cars filled the pit area for point race number two and fans were treated to some excellent racing in all divisions.
Sharing victory lane on Friday were Landon King with the Santa Cruz Apparel IMCA Sport Mods, Mike Villanueva with the Giuliani Construction IMCA Stock Cars, Dakota Keldsen with the R&J Landscaping Hobby Stocks and Jonathan Welborn with the Heat Wave Visual Four Bangers.
Haulot climbed out front at the waving of the green flag during the 25-lap Gold Star Sprint Car feature. Young Jett Barnes moved into second after a few laps and attempted to chase after the leader.
Making his debut with Keller Motorsports on Friday, all eyes were soon glued to Jake Andreotti, who found the high side to his liking in turns one and two.
Andreotti sliced his way into third on lap six and then began to hound the top two as the race wound down. The final five laps were a high-speed tussle between Haulot, Barnes and Andreotti. On lap 22 Andreotti charged into second and looked to have something for the leader.
Haulot hit his marks however and edged out Andreotti at the Ed Entz checkered flag. Jett Barnes came home a very close third after setting the Keith Day Trucking Fast Time for the second week in a row to start the evening.
Grant Duinkerken and young Landon Henry completed the top five. Andreotti took home the Taco Bravo Hard Charger Award in the feature.
The Santa Cruz Apparel IMCA Sport Mods brought a fantastic 24 car field to Watsonville Speedway on Friday. Pismo Beach driver Landon King rocketed out to the early lead in the 20-lap finale. Bakersfield’s Nicholas Johnson was on the move right from the get-go and assumed the runner up spot on lap eight.
Johnson applied pressure to King and seemed to have the speed to win but got into a spin seven circuits shy of the finish to draw a caution. King, who cut his teeth in Outlaw Karts, went on to tally his first Watsonville Speedway Sport Mod triumph.
Following King across the stripe were Ethan Johnson, Jason Bannister, Danny Wagner and Buddy Kniss.
The Watsonville Speedway debut of the Giuliani Construction IMCA Stock Cars saw the main event go right down to the wire. A solid field of 16 Stock Cars came out and provided some excellent action in their finale.
Atwater racer Mike Villanueva ended up leading all 20 laps, but he certainly had to work for it.
Tricky Troy Foulger and Fast Freddie Ryland gave him everything he could handle over the closing stages. Villanueva never faltered though and narrowly topped Foulger to bring home the bacon. Ryland came home third followed by Tyler Bannister and Paul Stone.
The R&J Landscaping Hobby Stocks were the show of the night with a tremendous 20 lap feature on Friday. Numerous drivers battled up front for the win, and it was not decided until the flag stand on the final lap.
Veteran driver Jerry Skelton from the famed Cheater Row Racing gang led a majority of the contest but had several fast cars hot on his heels. Bobby Gallaher, Dakota Keldsen, Adrianne Frost and Joe Gallaher were all within striking distance at times.
When the white flag waved it was Skelton and B. Gallaher who looked to be the pair deciding things. A wild final corner though saw both wash up the track, which allowed Keldsen to make a bold move down low and steal the win at the line.
The Heat Wave Visual Four Banger feature was a dominant performance by Jonathan Welborn who picked up the win by nearly three seconds. Shelbie Freeman gave it great run to score her best career finish in second followed by Tracy Sampson, Matt Wirth and Travis VanGilder.
Watsonville Speedway returns to action this coming Friday April 3rd with a five-division program headlined by the Gold Star GMC 360 Sprint Cars and the season debut of the SSSP South Bay Dwarf Cars.
