Paul Stone claims the American Giuliani Construction and Restoration Classic at Watsonville Speedway

Watsonville, CA…A total of 103 cars packed the pit area for the inaugural running of the American Giuliani Construction and Restoration Classic on Friday night at Watsonville Speedway.

When all was settled it was veteran driver Paul Stone who claimed the $2,500 grand prize with the Giuliani Construction IMCA Stock Cars.

Stone began the evening by qualifying second overall in the 26-car field and shot to the lead by way of the pole position in the feature. The Winton, CA driver ended up leading every lap, but it was far from easy for him.

A relentless Tyler Bannister ran the high scary side of the quarter mile and gave it everything he had to try and get by for the lead. Stone was smooth as glass on the bottom though and never gave Bannister an opportunity to pounce.

A late caution did set up a green, white, checkered restart that went into overtime and during it, Stone hit his marks to grab the Ed Entz checkered flag for victory over Bannister, 12th starter Lance Hurst, Fred Ryland and Terry Decarlo Jr. in the top five.

Completing the top 10 in the 30-lap contest were Justin Villaneuva, Mike Villanueva, Steven Johnson, Ryder Jeppesen and Jason Robles.

With the IMCA Modifieds, California legend Bobby Hogge only led one lap, but it was no doubt the one that counted. Fellow veteran Nick Decarlo of Martinez jumped into the lead at the green flag and held the field at bay for much of the race.

Hogge methodically gained speed as the race wore on and jumped from fourth to second on lap 20. After hounding Decarlo for a few laps it was just about time for him to make his move. With the white flag in the air, he tucked right up on the leader.

As the pair came around turn four for the final time Hogge sliced to the inside and made the pass, stealing the win away from Decarlo in a thrilling conclusion. Troy Foulger crossed the stripe in third followed by Markus Frazier and Cody Burke.

Atwater racer Tanner Thomas held the Santa Cruz Apparel IMCA Sport Mod point lead going into the night and led all 20-laps in the feature to record his first Watsonville triumph of the season.

Reigning track champion Danny Wagner ran second for most of the race and kept Thomas honest right down to the end. Wagner ended up second followed by Matthew Fraizer, Ethan Johnson and Fred Ryland.

Completing the top 10 in the IMCA Sport Mod finale were Jason Bannister, Tyler Irwin, Jason Ryan Jr, Bo Crebs and Trent Golden. A stellar 28 car field was on hand Friday for American Giuliani Construction Classic.

The R&J Landscaping Hobby Stocks put on an entertaining show during the American Giuliani Construction Classic. Veteran Sam Kennedy led the opening circuit, before Adriane Frost got by for the top spot on lap two.

Frost would hold command until a double file restart at the halfway point, when Lillie Mead then rocketed past on the outside. Mead led the remaining distance holding off a closing Jewell Crandall to claim the Hobby Stock victory.

Matt Kile, Wayne Reeder and Hunter Hammett comprised the top five.

Tony Gullo dominated the Heat Wave Visual Four Banger finale to get the win over Ryan McClelland and Matt Wirth.

Watsonville Speedway returns to action this coming Friday April 24th for Little League Night at the Races. In action will be the Gold Star GMC Winged 360 Sprint Cars, the R&J Landscaping Hobby Stocks, Police N Pursuit and the SSSP South Bay Dwarf Cars.
